Simu Liu's unusual career

This week's artist highlight is Simu Liu. If you already saw him in his most recent hit movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, you know how talented he is. However, we have already talked about how much we enjoyed his role in a previous blog and want to focus on him as a person today. Simu is an inspiration for many. Born in China and raised by his grandparents for the first few years, he did not think he would become an actor.

Liu grew up in Canada, similar to our previous artist of the week Dominique Fung. They are both second generation immigrants who went against the odds, and decided to pursue an artistic career. What I find the most incredible about the two of them, is that they refuse to limit themselves. For instance, Fung is experiencing with different mediums. On the other hand, Liu has a very strong resume, in many areas.

His acting career truly started off in a sitcom, leading to him then becoming the cultural icon he is today. In between, he worked jobs as a stunt double, a writer, and a producer. His dedication never changed over the years, and he continued to develop new skills and knowledge.

Although some of his past jobs are often meme-worthy, especially with his stock image portfolio, we see it as something more. Liu is a second generation immigrant, who graduated from Business School with honours. He even worked as an accountant. But unhappy, he chose to do something else with his life. He is the living proof that life is not a linear process. He shows the world he is more than his salient features, and that he is a human being with changing dreams, perseverance, and a deep love for his culture.
